The Lockington & District Living Heritage Complex Committee of Management organised the first event at the site of Burke & Wills' Camp 9, Kamarooka Estate (called Kamarooka Station or Patterson's Station in 1860), with assistance from the Shire of Campaspe. It took place on the actual anniversary of the Exploring Expedition's arrival there on 29 August 1860. Margaret O'Brien kindly provided a report and pictures -
About eighty visitors gathered near the Woolshed, which has been in situ since about 1857, and where the Expedition is believed to have camped, for a bring-your-own picnic lunch. The Member for Rodney, Paul Weller was in attendance, and Councillor Greg Toll represented the Shire of Campaspe.
The celebration began with a retelling of the story of Burke & Wills by Cohuna storyteller, Julie Smith. Trevor Osborne, the current owner of Kamarooka Estate followed with a brief outline of the history of the property, and then came some of the local folk-lore about the happenings that day in 1860 as the Expedition travelled from Barnadown to Kamarooka. With assistance from Mr & Mrs Osborne and Julie Smith, Cr Greg Toll then unveiled an interpretive sign which will be placed at the entrance to Kamarooka Estate.
Despite a couple of weeks of intermittent rain, which threatened to disrupt plans, the weather on the day was cloudy but dry, and quite mild. The track was passable, and the Creek was running a banker but not actually flooding. I think the event was enjoyed by all.
