The evening talk at Baynton was fascinating. The old hall (which no doubt had been the social hub of the district in years gone by) was full of locals eager to share their family Burke and Wills stories that had been passed down from generation to generation. The main speaker was very knowledgeable and weaved an interesting story about the links to the Burke and Wills story - not only the expeditioners on their way north but also Burke's early time at Carlsruhe and King's return through nearby Kyneton. There was also reference to the earlier trip of William Blandowski through the region. The highlight to me was the discussion about the exact location where Becker had painted the sketch "Crossing a Volcanic Crater" from, with many locals adding input. A great night, finished off by the rising of a full moon as I travelled north across Spring Plain. I wonder if Burke and Wills had a similar experience?
