The first Bug Blitz event organised jointly by Bug Blitz Inc and the Royal Society of Victoria was held at Castlemaine Primary School on 20 August 2010, the anniversary of the Departure.
The day began with an opening ceremony at the school where Dr Peter Thorne, Vice-President of the Royal Society of Victoria, presented the school with a commemorative certificate, science books and a microscope from the Royal Society.
Next was a performance of a short drama by Two Friends Productions, which told the Burke and Wills story from the point of view of Dr Ludwig Becker, the "artist-slash-naturalist" of the Expedition. Their rendition of his life (and death) was hilarious, but at the same time provided the students with plenty of well-researched information about the Expedition.
The students then walked to Happy Valley for a field day. Groups rotated through activities including a discovery walk and specimen selection with John Caldow and Dr Alan Yen, a session on reptiles with "Snakebusters" and a session on identifying birds and setting up nesting boxes and feeding trays with Emily McLeod and Shandiya Balasubramaniam.
Bug Blitz™ is a program funded in Victoria by a philanthropic trust, the Hugh Williamson Foundation. It aims to interest primary school children in biodiversity. Students take projects from discovery to presentation – from finding out about their environment, identifying species etc to a public presentation of their findings to parents and friends. The Royal Society formed a partnership with Bug Blitz to promote this activity.
