Burke and Wills: The Opera

The Royal Society of Victoria has approached Melbourne Composer Calvin Bowman with a view to commissioning an opera based on the Burke and Wills story. Our application to the Australia Council for funding was not successful, but we have made further applications to Arts Victoria and to the State Library of Victoria, and we are seeking support for the creative phase from philanthropic organisations and private individuals.

statuebwThe well-known statue of Burke and Wills has been on more journeys than the explorers it represents. It has been moved five times since it was erected in 1865, and there are many who have expressed negative views about its present location in the City Square. Proposed changes to Swanston Street may mean that it is time for Burke and Wills to move on.
